PhraseMine vs. GummySearch

GummySearch sorted Reddit threads into feeds like Pain & Anger and Solution Requests. PhraseMine turns those same conversations into tagged excerpts you can write with. One more thing: GummySearch closed to new signups in November 2025.

Understanding GummySearch

GummySearch Was Built for Founders, Not Copywriters

GummySearch was a Reddit audience research toolkit, and a well-loved one. It grew to more than 135,000 founders, marketers, and investors searching across 130,000-plus subreddits. If you spent time in indie startup circles, someone recommended it to you.

Its central idea was the “audience.” You grouped a set of related subreddits into one searchable bundle. Instead of checking r/gardening, then r/vegetablegardening, then nine more by hand, you built one gardening audience covering 13.8 million people and searched all of it at once.

Then it sorted the conversations inside that audience into eight curated feeds: Top Content, Hot Discussions, Solution Requests, Advice Requests, Pain & Anger, Ideas, Money Talk, and Opportunities. Under the hood those feeds were smart sets of intent phrases. Solution Requests caught things like “looking for a tool” and “any recommendations.” Pain & Anger caught “sick of” and “frustrated with.” Money Talk caught “too expensive” and “worth paying for.”

That was genuinely clever for idea validation. If you wanted to know whether a problem was real before you built anything, Pain & Anger plus Solution Requests got you an answer in an afternoon. GummySearch also had AI pattern finding, an ask-a-question feature, saved lists, and keyword alerts that pushed into Slack or Discord on the higher plans. Pricing ran from about $29 a month up to $199.

Here is where it fell short for copywriters. Those feeds sorted threads, not sentences. Pain & Anger handed you 40 discussions that smelled like frustration. You still opened each one, read a few hundred comments, and copied the good lines into a Google Doc by hand. The sorting saved you the finding. It never saved you the reading.

The feeds also told you a thread was angry. They did not tell you whether the person had no idea their problem had a name, or whether they had two products open in two tabs and just needed a nudge. For copy, that distinction decides your whole headline. A feed label cannot make that call.

And then the practical part. GummySearch stopped taking new signups on November 30, 2025, after it could not reach an agreement with Reddit over data API terms. Existing paid accounts wind down through 2026. So if you landed here hoping to sign up, that door is already shut.

The PhraseMine difference

PhraseMine Reads the Threads and Tags the Language

PhraseMine starts from a brief, not a subreddit list. You describe the product, the audience, and what you are writing. You do not have to already know which communities matter, which is the part most people guess at.

From that brief, PhraseMine's AI builds a search strategy in three passes. A broad search runs 15 to 25 queries across different angles. A focused search runs five to 10 more, drilling into whatever the broad pass proved was working. Then three to five edge case queries go after the niche and contrarian corners, the threads nobody else bothers to read.

Then PhraseMine reads the conversations it finds and pulls out the lines that matter. You get excerpts, not a reading list. Each one keeps its exact wording, because the whole point is the wording.

Every excerpt carries two tags. A research tag says what kind of language it is: Pain, Dream, Obstacle, Trigger, Identity, or Objection. An awareness stage places the person on Eugene Schwartz's five stages. So “I did not even know software like this existed” lands as unaware, and “I have had two of these in two browser tabs for a week now” lands as most aware. Same audience, opposite ends of your funnel, and you can see which is which at a glance.

PhraseMine also builds voice profiles: a synthesized writing-voice reference pulled from your research themes. Hand it to another writer, use it to guide an AI draft, or check your own copy against it before you ship.

And it tells you when to stop. The saturation report shows how well you have covered the ground and where the gaps still are. GummySearch feeds never ended. You browsed until you got bored, then hoped that was enough.

Two different jobs

Validating an Idea vs. Writing the Copy

GummySearch Was Good At

  • Finding which subreddits your audience actually lives in
  • Checking whether a problem is real before you build
  • Spotting product ideas people ask for out loud
  • Watching a keyword and getting pinged in Slack
  • Getting a fast read on a niche you know nothing about

PhraseMine Is Good At

  • Pulling the exact sentences people use about their problem
  • Sorting language by Pain, Dream, Obstacle, Trigger, Identity, and Objection
  • Matching every phrase to an awareness stage so you know where it goes
  • Building a voice profile you can hand to another writer
  • Telling you when you have researched enough

GummySearch answered a founder's question: is this problem real, and where do these people hang out? PhraseMine answers a copywriter's question: what exact words do I put on the page? If your GummySearch routine was browsing Pain & Anger feeds and pasting the good lines into a Google Doc, PhraseMine does that second half for you. It is also still taking signups, which GummySearch has not done since November 2025.

GummySearch Is Closed. Your Research Does Not Have To Stop.
